Development of IT in Karakalpakstan: Minister Sets New Priorities

Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov visited the Karakalpakstan branch of IT Park and outlined strategic goals to enhance the region's technological development. During the visit, discussions focused on promising projects designed to support young professionals and help advance their ideas on international markets.

The visit of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Karakalpakstan in August 2024 marked a significant milestone for the development of the region's IT sector. The President paid special attention to creating a favorable environment for young IT specialists. He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to supporting startups — from their inception to their expansion into global markets. The President noted that the development of the technology sector directly impacts the region's economic growth, opens up new opportunities for attracting investments, increases employment, and improves the quality of life for the population.

Following the strategic priorities of Digital Uzbekistan-2030, Minister Sherzod Shermatov highlighted key directions for the development of the IT sector in Karakalpakstan. Among the top priorities are expanding the export potential of IT services and increasing the creation of high-paying jobs for young people. The Minister emphasized the importance of attracting foreign companies to the region, which would facilitate experience sharing, the implementation of advanced technologies, and enhancing competition in the market.

During visit to Karakalpakstan, the Minister also saw the activities of the 'Voice Solution VB' BPO centre. The center aims to increase exports of IT services in the region by creating more than 100 new jobs by the end of 2024. The plan was approved on 20 June this year on the basis of the minister's initiative, according to which the centre was allocated the entire 16th floor of the IT Park building in Nukus.

During his meeting with the Centre's staff, Sherzod Shermatov appreciated the potential of young people in the IT field and emphasised the importance of further expanding their experience with foreign markets. The management of the centre was also presented with a number of proposals for increasing the number of jobs, improving the quality of services and attracting new clients.

Concluding his visit, Minister Sherzod Shermatov stated that the successful fulfillment of these goals would be a significant step toward transforming Karakalpakstan into one of Uzbekistan's key technological hubs. He underscored the importance of joint efforts by all stakeholders — the government, businesses, and youth — in building an innovative ecosystem that would contribute to economic growth and enhance the region's competitiveness in the global IT market.

Tax incentives for startups and foreign investors in Uzbekistan’s IT sector

When I write about Uzbekistan’s tech ecosystem, I keep returning to one theme: opportunity. Unlike in many emerging markets, opportunity here is not just a buzzword, it is being codified into law, built into fiscal frameworks, and delivered through the state-backed IT Park. For startups and foreign investors, the most powerful lever remains the country’s generous package of tax incentives, which have turned IT Park residency into a competitive advantage.
