The Legatum Center at MIT hosted a Brownbag Talk titled “Tech Transformation in Central Asia: Shaping the Future of Innovation,” featuring Abdulakhad Kuchkarov, Executive Director of IT Park Uzbekistan, who provided insights into Central Asia's rapidly emerging tech landscape.
Moderated by Shamil Ibragimov - Scholar in Residence at The Legatum Center at MIT, the talk underscored the dynamic development of IT infrastructure across Central Asia, with a special focus on Uzbekistan’s commitment to becoming a renowned global IT hub and explored opportunities for regional and international collaboration to accelerate growth.
A central theme was the Central Asian Innovation Hubs initiative, a regional effort led by IT Park Uzbekistan and Astana Hub to unify startup ecosystems across Central Asia and expand their international reach. This collaboration is enabling Central Asian startups to gain momentum, forge partnerships with global leaders, and showcase their innovations on the world stage.
Also Abdulakhad Kuchkarov emphasized the role of IT Park in advancing the IT industry and promoting Uzbekistan’s tech excellence and outsourcing capabilities internationally. Since its establishment, IT Park has been dedicated to nurturing startups and attracting prominent global organizations like Plug and Play Tech Center, Seedstars, and venture funds such as Sturgeon Capital and Domino VC . These strategic partnerships have been crucial in positioning Uzbekistan at the forefront of Central Asia's rapidly evolving tech ecosystem.
He also highlighted the Uzbek government's support for the tech industry, addressing both the challenges and opportunities in building a thriving digital economy. It is important to mention the support programs and initiatives provided by IT Park's to leverage the tech landscape of the country, including the recently established $10 million IT Park Venture Fund and the Local2Global program, both designed to empower startups and attract international investment. These initiatives offer an in-depth perspective on the future of tech in Central Asia and the region’s expanding role on the global stage.
Discussions also explored potential collaborations with MIT’s ecosystem, including the Legatum Center, to strengthen ties between Uzbekistan and the global innovation community.
